"It's got a stinky smell Mum". Need to educate him on the difference between stinky smell and perfume.

“It’s got a stinky smell Mum”. Need to educate him on the difference between stinky smell and perfume.

A couple of weeks ago friends came for lunch and they brought some chrysanthemums over for me (well I’m presuming they were for me and not Martin ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) which were hastily shoved in a vase of water. Fast forward a week and the water is seriously manky. When I said I was going to clean them up Jasper expressed a desire to help.

Firstly we pulled them out of the vase and cut off a large part of the crusty stalks. Jas then took the yellow ones and I the white and we both stripped off the leaves before popping them back into smaller vases.

FernGully: The Last Rainforest.

“Humans can’t feel anything. They’re numb from the brain down.” Robin Williams – Batty FernGully: The Last Rainforest

I was thinking through the films I’d watched as a kid and that I could remember, I suddenly thought about FernGully: The Last Rainforest. I remember watching this film, with my friend April I think. I know I was keen to watch it as I was a big fan of Christian Slater at the time (no laughing now) who is the voice of Pips but I don’t think the film made much environmental impact on me at the time.ย Well, I watched it today with the kids. I had forgotten about Christian Slater voicing for Pips until I heard him speak (ok, it was a major crush I had back 20 years ago ok ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) but then I heard Batty speak and lo and behold, Robin Williams! Not quite at the levels of brilliance as he was as the Genie in Aladdin but still brilliant none the less. I had a few giggles over jokes the kids didn’t get. And of course, what other actor could play evil so well as theย inestimable Tim Curry as Hexxus.

Watching it again after so many years was wonderful but it was never a huge favourite so I hadn’t remembered much of the storyline. I found it a little lacking but for kids I’m sure they loved it. It’s definitely aimed at kids older than mine but I know Jasper and Allegra enjoyed it even if it left Jasper full of lots more questions. He’s like that. Allegra would be happy just to plant a garden like FernGully. ๐Ÿ™‚

I wish there were a lot more kids films dealing with environmental issues to be honest.

Jasper garlic drawing

Jasper’s garlic artwork. I think the babies thing comes from us watching some kittens being born (youTube) yesterday.

Blue and yellow garlic? Hmmm. Pink, purple and white for sure. Love the imagination of kids.

Chalk Pad Free is a fun app for iPads and makes it easy for kids to draw things for emailing and consequently posting on blogs too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Daddy’s favourite bulb

Allegra: Daddy likes all of the garlic. He loves all of the garlic now.

RLH: Allegra, how did we plant the garlic?

Allegra: We breaked it up, and then we breaked the other piece up and then…

RLH: After we broke it all up, what did we do with it?

Allegra: Buried it.

RLH: So how did we bury it?

Allegra: Just a little bit Mummy, and then we put the *seeds back in and then I had a quick Trevor ride. Continue reading

Digging with Mum in the garden

Yesterday turned out to be a nice day, despite the early start of rain. We went out into the garden to dig some fence post holes, move some compost into the garden and generally dig. Allegra isn’t very well again poor love so she had a sleep and Orik was down for a nap so it was Jasper manning the scoop digger and me on the spade. He filled the wheelbarrow and I emptied it for him. Works for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s pictures of the construction site manager.

Allegra has been enjoying her play dough and is learning to “write” with it too. ๐Ÿ™‚ I took these pics the other day.
